4Excellent Value  Nov 11, 2006 By P. Scott Pope "Scott Pope"
For the price, this light is hard to beat. Over the years, I have used approximately twenty different bicycle lights by brands such as Cateye, Cygolite and Planet Bike. While some of these were significantly better than the Bell, they were also three to ten times as expensive. If you don't mind the large mass of four AA batteries on your handlebars and have under twenty dollars to spend, the Bell Night Trail bicycle light is the way to go.

The real downside to having the batteries in the enclosure is the hazard created when the housing becomes dislodged during an impact. While this has not happened with the Bell light, it did occur with a Planet Bike light while riding through traffic in NYC. The distraction was extremely dangerous. Losing half of the batteries was not fun either.

Fortunately, the Bell light has a sturdy enclosure where the top half slides backwards to open. This makes it almost impervious to front and vertical impacts. However, the internal latches never quite give you a clear indication that it is closed. Rather, you must squeeze the top downward and push forward simultaneously until you can't move it further.

Much like the headlight, the taillight compares well to more expensive lights. Similar to competing products, it has various blinking modes as a well as an always-on setting. Due to the design of the lens, light escapes from the sides and top of the light. Such side lighting is crucial for riding in urban areas.

The build quality is good but not on par with the $100+ lighting systems. But again, the selling point of this light is overall value. Some of the nicer features include a bright Xenon bulb paired with miserly LED lights that can blink for hours. Unlike some of the MR11-based bulbs (parabolic track lighting bulbs), the lens assembly has two ports on the right and left sides. This spreads light perpendicularly to the path of travel, which is a nice feature when in traffic. These features combined with a very modest price make this light an excellent choice for the budget conscious.

Pros
Value
Brightness
Combination of LED and Xenon modes
Decent build quality
Side lighting on headlight

Cons
Questionable design of battery compartment (top half of headlight)
Bulky
LEDs could be brighter

2Good light, terrible mounting hardware  Jun 01, 2010 By rlynow?
This is a great light for the price.

It is very much a "see" rather than "be seen" light, meaning it provides good light in darkness, I was able to ride comfortable at 20 MPH down unfamiliar roads at night.

However, the mounting hardware is cheap and not even remotely durable. I hit a small curb on my commute and the headlight snapped the mounting hardware and shattered all over the pavement. The rear light was dislodged as well and met a similar fate.

For the couple dozen rides it survived, it was still worth my time, but I would not recommend this product to another rider unless (s)he was willing to secure it to the bike's frame with a combination of zip ties and super glue.

1NOT WHAT'S ADVERTISED  Mar 30, 2011 By bobster
These folks make it hard to return (answering machine full and didn't pick up) and charge a 10% restocking fee. The tail light is not as pictured (mine is all red).
May be a good product, but not quite right for my bike.

4Great for the price  Sep 02, 2011 By ArlingtonRightNow
I had this light set on my bike, which was recently stolen, and after pricing out other light options, we decided to get this light set again for my new bike - and a second set for my husband. It's not the *best* light on the market, but it works well and it's so much cheaper than the others out there that it seemed like the best buy.

The light works quite well for "being seen" as a bicycle commuter on the road. I also like that the batteries last forever - though admittedly, I rarely use them for more than my 40 minute commute, so they might go faster if you were using them for long rides. I also like that the clip used to attach the rear light works well to clip it onto my backpack. I often use it that way, instead of clipped on to the bicycle mount.

Downsides may be that the headlight is not the brightest out there. It does provide enough light to see if you're going slowly or are biking in an area with street lights, but we rarely use them to bike at night. In addition, they're a bit of a challenge to mount - we never got it mounted right last time, but I think we figured it out this time.

1not the light pictured above  Jun 23, 2009 By N. Estrada "panch02"
I bought this light set and when received, it was not the chrome color as in the picture. It is another bell light set that is black with grey stripes on it. I am very disappointed because the people I bought it from (promaxsupply) don't even carry the chrome colored one so now I have to send them back and buy another set. Now it is possible that only promaxsupply is the only one who does not carry this chrome color I am not sure.
