1Worst customer service .. ever  Mar 12, 2010
You are on your own if you buy anything from smooth!
Late shipping? no problem, they think it's ok to ship within 3 months, although they charge your credit card the next day of ordering!
Not satisfied with the product? no problem, you can return it within 30 days!
But first you have to back it in the original package the same way it was, which is like impossible
Then they will deduct 20% for restocking
Then another $150 for shipping
Then you'll have to pay for shipping back , another $150 at least!
This is a total of $700 yo loose, who dares to return?
So it's better to leave with all the squicking and cracking, it was your fault in the 1st place that you bough it before reading REAL customers reviews

2usable but barely  Feb 10, 2010
I've had my Smooth 3.2 for more than a year and it is functional but I can't say I'm satisfied with it. I have used moderate to high quality ellipticals in apartment fitness rooms for many years previously. At the time I bought it in 2008 there were very few decent ellipticals in the $1500 range. That has changed with some good ones significantly less than that available now. I'll keep this one until I move, and then I'll give it away or sell it cheap. An elliptical is something you need to try out before you buy. It must feel right. I wouldn't buy a pair of everyday shoes without wearing them and walking in them first. I've tried expensive Precors that I didn't like so you can't just buy a respected brand either. Unfortunately, I was in a hurry and bought mine based on the reviews online and a family member who recommended it. As an aside, I purchased a $100 mini trampoline for my mother which she still uses and enjoys. After trying it myself, I wondered why I spent $1500 on an elliptical. If you are looking for a fun form of aerobic exercise and you want something cheap, seriously consider a good mini trampoline.

I will say that the Smooth 3.2 is heavy and stable and has a very solid feel. The problems, however, are numerous. I was able to put it together myself but you really need two people to hold and attach the heavy parts. I did need to use my hand as a hammer to get two parts of the frame put together. Once built, one person should be able to roll it on the rear wheels if needed. The manual is poor but the pictures are good enough to build it. You will need to plug it in at the rear (not mentioned in the instructions) to get the display to light up.

My heels lifted on each cycle so I had to put washers under the footbeds to shim them up. The left footbed banged against the frame but there is enough room in the footbed bolt slot to slide it to the outside to fix it. I still felt that the feet were spread too far apart while exercising but that is typical of almost all ellipticals of this type, apparently. My feet also tended to climb out of the footbeds so I had to remove the pads to let the feet sit deeper in the footbed wells. The footbeds were also rather noisy, with or without the pads, with either of my running or walking shoes. The machine did develop some jerkiness and noise at the upper and lower arm joints after about a month but applying grease liberally to the bearings fixed almost all of the problem. You should definitely apply the grease when you are building it since it is somewhat of a pain to break it down and put it back together later. There was also a rubbing sound of the flywheel against the right rear flywheel cover. I just have to leave the right flywheel cover off, which lets more dust get into the mechanism, but that is unavoidable. The stickers carrying the brand name curled up and wouldn't stay attached to the flywheel covers but that is not really important. If the heart rate monitor is important you will probably be disappointed. You must keep both hands and fingers firmly grasping the arms to get a reading from the arm sensors. If you let go for four or five seconds to scratch you head or something you will lose the reading. This is inconvenient but a bigger problem is the reliability of the reading. I have often gotten readings of 70 or less when working out heavily and gotten readings over 140 when hardly feeling I'm working out at all. I did attempt to use the chest strap for a more accurate reading, but it was completely non-functional. After speaking to a representative on the phone they sent out a replacement strap but it was also completely non-functional.

All in all, this machine is usable, but there are many better and cheaper ellipticals available now. Definitely try before you buy either at the store or from someone who already has one and likes it.

1Worst customer service ever  May 09, 2008
It has been 3 months since I purchsed my CE3.2 elliptical, and I have yet to use it once. I have spent more than 5 hours on the phone trying to get Smooth Fitness to repair the unit (which arrived badly damaged), but so far they have managed to send the wrong parts four different times. The same service technician has been out each time, and even he is getting frustrated with Smooth. We have both sent in multiple pictures of the damage, as well as detailed descriptions, and still the wrong parts continue to show up. I don't know who is running the service department, but whoever they are, they are seriously overpaid. Avoid this company at all costs.

Assembly and setup were a breeze. It comes with all the necessary tools beautifully and orderly packaged with the parts visually numbered. Excellent display and ride. It glides like Gym 4K comercial Elliptical.

5This is smoooooth...  Feb 19, 2008
The Smooth Fitness elliptical machine is an affordable and flexible exerciser every bit as good as any I have used in commercial clubs. It was easy to put together--a little heavy, but that makes it stable--two people can move it nicely and I got it going by myself. It has a solid feel, good variety of computer-generated workout options with timing and wireless heart rate monitor. I like the 18" stride, the handles for upper body work while "walking", the computer that remembers both users (wife & me) and easily changes between exercise options. A good-looking piece of equipment that works as advertised, smoothly and solidly. I can certainly recommend this for the "indoor runner/walker."
