Not as easy as I thought Mar 12, 2006
By W. Morrison I purchased the universal mighty mount package thinking that it might be an affordable way to use my old yakima racks.(1994) The tool provided did not fit the nuts that are required for installation. The directions are a little vage on how to mount the ski racks once the mounts are attached to the vehicle. (It doesn't state any instructions)I went to the web site for help, but no luck. I had to use my own parts to attach the ski rack to the mounts because my rack has these large wing type nuts that aren't compatible with the mighty mounts (no clearance)
I haven't test drove the rack yet, but it seems secure.

Not Compatible with Fork Mount Bike Carriers Aug 22, 2008 After ordering this product and installing it, I discovered (on another website that wasn't Yakima or Amazon) that these Mighty Mounts are not compatible with fork mount bicycle carriers. They are so flimsy I would be hesitant to use them with any bicycle carriers.
I became suspicious after I installed them and found that the bike was literally swinging in the light breeze.
Inside the clamp is a nut that tightens down to merely plastic. One good sidewind gust and that nut is sure to pull right through.

Yakima quality Jul 13, 2005

These configure nicely to my '05 Sienna minivan and would have worked equally well on my just-sold '97 Explorer. Both vehicles have factory roof racks, making Yakima towers unnecessary. This keeps the cost down considerably, since you don't need to shell out for the crossbars, either.
Yakima sells a bunch of other adapters - probably more readily available at your local sporting goods store - but these run only a few bucks less than the universal ones, which allow you to slap many more Yakima racks up there. Handy for cross-training surfers, kayakers, travelers, etc. Maybe someday for me.
Installation or removal requires slightly less patience than assembling an entertainment unit from Target, so plan on taking your time. (Using the specific Yakima adapters makes the job quite a bit easier.) It helps having another person's assistance. Definitely put a thick blanket on your car's roof to avoid marring the surface from the inevitable slip-up.
Yakima's locking system tacks on some bucks to your arrangement, which you need since these adapters are relatively simple to remove, even with a bike planted firmly in them. Sigh...just think how much money we could all save if there weren't any thieves around...

Worked great on my Xterra Aug 30, 2011
By blaise Wanted to install my Yakima bike racks on my Xterra, but the latches were way too small. After calling Yakima, they said these are what I needed.
Installation on the bike racks was fairly simple, this took a little thought, as the directions didn't explain attaching them to anything but your car, but that's half the battle. After about an hr, it was said and done, and my bikes were secure on the roof!
I wouldn't recommend interchanging these to different racks (bikes, snowboards, etc.), as it takes some time to disassemble. You can however pretty easily take them off your car (while attached to the bike, etc. rack) and place them on another.
I searched for a long while, and Amazon had the best price, so don't waste your time, I already wasted mine for you! Trust me.
If you have large crossbars, go for these, they are great, been using them for a few months now with no issue. Only word of advice is to check to make sure they are still tight every so often, especially if you use them often. They seemed not to loosen, but the rubber to form tighter, resulting in the screws seeming to have gotten lose, so you will have to tighten a bit more once or twice to 100% security. Other than that, A+ Yakima, steep price, but still worth it if you need it!

You can use these with older Yakima ski racks Oct 15, 2011
By Eric Hart I just wanted to correct another reviewer who said that he had to buy his own bolts to get his older ski rack to work, and that he wasn't able to use the original bolts and long wing nuts that came with his ski rack. This is actually not the case. In fact, you want to use the original wing nuts to help prevent theft (assuming you add locks to your Mighty Mounts).
It took me a few minutes to work out, and here's the trick:
1. Put the carriage bolt through the adapter
2. Slide the adapter into your ski rack
3. Attach and tighten your ski rack wingnuts so that the adapter is fastened into the ski rack.
4. ONLY AFTERWARDS do you attach the rest of the parts to the carriage bolt.
This won't mean anything to you until you have the package open and the parts in front of you, but then it will make sense.
I have to agree these mighty mounts are quite a bit trickier to install than I expected. It took me well over an hour to get the racks in place. I would definitely have preferred the "car-specific" mighty mounts, which I have successfully used before, and which are a cinch to install. Unfortunately they don't make a set of those that fits my wife's new vehicle (2009 Forester with factory racks). I think they may be phasing these out over time, which is a shame, but I would go that route if it's available to you.
